On the west side of San Francisco, getting around from the Knights Inn means choosing between Muni for city journeys and BART for regional trips. Muni includes buses, Metro trains and historic streetcars; BART connects San Francisco with the wider Bay Area. The Palace of Fine Arts is about a 7-minute walk from the Knights Inn.

  • Muni: Buses, Metro trains and historic streetcars serve different parts of the city.
  • BART: 16th St./Mission Station is at 2000 Mission Street and serves routes toward SFO and OAK.
  • Fares: An adult Muni single ride costs $2.85 with MuniMobile or Clipper, or $3.00 with cash or a Metro ticket machine.
  • Walking: Chinatown-Rose Pak is a Muni Metro stop with elevator access.

Muni buses, Metro, and streetcars

Muni buses, Metro trains and historic streetcars offer several ways to travel within San Francisco. SFMTA names routes including the 9 San Bruno, 14 Mission, 14R Mission Rapid, 22 Fillmore, 33 Ashbury/18th Street and 49 Van Ness/Mission.

For an adult ride, ages 19–64, the fare is $2.85 with MuniMobile or Clipper, or $3.00 with cash or a Metro ticket machine. The fare is valid for 120 minutes of travel. A Muni Day Pass costs $5.70 for unlimited rides on Muni buses, trains and historic streetcars for one day. Check the official site before you go.

If you plan to use Muni and a connecting transit agency, a $2.85 discount off the adult Clipper fare applies to a transfer to Muni within two hours of the first trip. Muni also connects at 16th St./Mission Station, where you can change between services.

Several downtown Muni Metro stations have elevator access between street, concourse and platform. This also applies at Church Street, Castro Street, Forest Hill, Chinatown-Rose-Pak and Union Square-Market Street.

How do you get to BART for regional and airport journeys?

How do you get to BART for regional and airport journeys?

16th St./Mission BART Station is at 2000 Mission Street, San Francisco, CA 94110, and is a station to consider for BART connections. BART names four lines serving it: Dublin/Pleasanton–Daly City, Antioch–SFIA/Millbrae, Berryessa/North San Jose–Daly City, and Richmond–Millbrae/SFIA.

Southbound trains include service to San Francisco International Airport (SFO); the station also has northbound service toward Oakland International Airport (OAK). Check the destination signs and departure announcements before boarding, since the direction and destination matter.

Clipper is the only fare product available for purchasing BART fares systemwide. The station has no parking. For step-free access between the street and trains, use two elevators: one at 16th and Mission streets on the northeast side, leading to the concourse, and another inside the paid area, leading to the platform.

For airport trip planning, how to get from San Francisco International Airport to the Knights Inn is covered in a separate route guide.

Cable cars and when they are useful

Cable cars and when they are useful

San Francisco cable cars are part of the Muni system, but a single cable car ride has its own fare and does not include transfers. A single ride costs $9 with no transfers.

If you expect to make several trips on Muni services, compare the fare options before setting out. The Visitor Passport costs $15 for one day of unlimited rides on Muni, Muni Metro, historic streetcars and cable cars. The adult monthly Muni pass costs $86, while the adult monthly “M” Pass, which includes cable cars, costs $104.

For a one-day visit focused on Muni, the Day Pass covers buses, trains and historic streetcars; the Visitor Passport adds cable cars. Check the current fare details with SFMTA before choosing, as fares and payment options can change.

Walking, hills, and planning a return trip

Walking, hills, and planning a return trip

Walking connects some local sights, but destinations are spread across the city. Alta Plaza Park is about 23 minutes on foot from the Knights Inn, while the city centre is about 59 minutes away on foot.

Chinatown is served by the Chinatown-Rose Pak Muni Metro stop, which has street-to-platform elevator access. From the Knights Inn, the stop is about 6 minutes by car; pair a Chinatown visit with a look around the neighbourhood.

For a day that includes the Palace of Fine Arts, the guide to visiting the Palace of Fine Arts covers the landmark. When planning a day on foot, keep the route’s hills in mind and decide in advance whether to walk back or use transit or a car.

If you are heading to Chinatown, what to know for a practical visit to Chinatown can help with neighbourhood planning.
